Bio: I received my BS from the Middle East Technical University, Turkey in Sociology and my MSc in Sociology from the Ghent University, Belgium. My master thesis addressed the impact of the nation-building process in Iraqi Kurdistan on Kurdish Diaspora. I am currently a PhD student in the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences at the Ghent University, Belgium within the MENARG (Middle East and North Africa Research Group). My doctoral research deals with the (re)construction of the Kurdish identity in Turkey. This research addresses the development of the Kurdish national movement in Turkey and its socio-political impacts, in particular on identity politics in Turkey. The ways in which Kurdish political actors have contributed to the transformation of a homogenized, exclusionary public sphere in Turkey will be under investigation. This research will at the same time analyse both the transformations in the public sphere in order to allow certain forms of recognition of the Kurdish identity, and look at how the Kurdish identity and politics is constructed within that public space. At a very general level, this research can be situated at the junction of nationalism, political-social movements and identity politics. 1.
