Bio: I am a historian and scholar of Tibetan Studies. I received my BA (Oriental Studies) and MA (Oriental Studies) from the University of Bologna in 2006 and 2010, and my M.Phil (Tibetan and Himalayan Studies) and D.Phil (Oriental Studies) from the University of Oxford in 2012 and 2017. My doctoral research investigated the form and function of a 20th-century autobiographical writing composed by an Eastern Tibetan trader-cum-pilgrim between 1944 and 1956. To do so, I employed close reading and analysis of Tibetan texts and archival material: using narratology and socio-economy as main heuristic devices, I presented cogent proofs of the socio-historical value of life writing. I have been a fellow at Centre de recherche sur les civilisations de l'Asie orientale (Paris) and member of the ANR/DFG funded research project “Social Status in the Tibetan World”, positions that I held from November 2017 to September 2020. I am currently a member of the School of Historical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (IAS fellow, 2021-2022). My publications include journal articles and edited volumes on different aspects of the socio-economic and cultural history of Tibet, which a special focus on the 20th century. My interests range from Tibetan Buddhism, Indo-Tibetan interactions, Tibetan biographical writing and narrative literature to borderland studies, political economy, and globalisation in Asia. |
