Sue Kozel <suekozel@gmail.com> Kean University, retired Difficult Historical Questions deserve detailed research, evidence, and thoughtfulness. My unconventional journey in the academy has brought me to be creative, undeterred, and focused in researching slavery and freedom as a human rights topic. I enjoy working with K-12 teachers as well as faculty whether in adjunct or distinguished professor positions. No question should be left unanswered and should drive new scholarship. While I am recently retired, I am very active in our field, now helping K-12 teachers think about resources for teaching American history that is inclusive and not only a white male history. Very interested in Quaker history, slave history, unfreedom, the memory of slavery, the role of monuments as myth or history, the memory of tyranny, human rights present and past, the history of rape and subjugation of women across social layers, and innovative ways to teach and engage not only students but citizens. I see education as part of citizenship both in one's country but also in the world. Currently working on a book project on the murder of a NJ enslaved woman by her owner in 1784, Wench Betty.
