Bio: Eastern Oregon University – Oregon’s Rural University! In early 2018, Eastern Oregon University was officially designated as Oregon’s Rural University. Eastern Oregon University has been serving rural Oregon since its founding as a teacher’s college in 1929 and continues to be the regional residential and online institution focal point for citizens of all ages in establishing and enabling higher education in the rural communities throughout the Pacific NW. Achieving official designation also marks progress toward accomplishing the goals laid out in the EOU’s Ascent strategic plan, including the aim to be recognized as a leader in promoting prosperity and resilience in rural communities. Located in La Grande, Oregon, EOU presents a gorgeous campus situated at the base of the picturesque Blue Mountains in the historic Grande Ronde Valley. EOU combines a strong emphasis on access and quality and offers excellent educational opportunities for residents of rural communities dispersed over the large geographical region of Eastern Oregon, Eastern Washington, Idaho, and beyond. With a student body of nearly 3,000 students, about 1,400 students attend classes at the main campus in La Grande. EOU was an early adopter of distance and online education and was highly successful in delivering higher education to the many rural communities throughout the region, state, and country. EOU’s passionate, caring, and distinguished faculty take pride in the close interaction and mentoring of students. Over half of all students matriculate beyond the boundaries of campus through its distance and online education courses. For students enrolled on-campus, EOU provides a learning environment that takes full advantage of updated classrooms and modern facilities including a brand new synthetic turf sports field and track, major renovation of the McKenzie Theater, restoration of historic north campus, and an upcoming new athletic field house. |
