Bio: My research and writing in the history of modern political thought includes many articles and several books on Jeremy Bentham and utilitarianism, the most recent being Utilitarian Philosophy and Politics: Bentham’s Later Years (2011; rept. 2013) and The Encyclopedia of Utilitarianism (2013; rest. 2017). Currently, I am examining the dissemination and impact of utilitarian ideas in nineteenth century America. This project has received support from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and Fulbright Canada. I have been Professor of Political Theory at Huron University College, a part of Western University in Canada, since 1987. Born in Cardiff in the UK, I graduated B.A. and M.A. from Swansea University in Wales, and Ph.D from Western University. In 2013-14, I was Fulbright Research Chair in the Department of Philosophy, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee, USA. In 1994-99, I was Dean of arts and Social Science at Huron University College. Previously I held visiting fellowships in the Institute for the Humanities at the University of Manitoba; the International Society for Eighteenth–Century Studies at the Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Filosofici, Naples, Italy; and American Society for Eighteenth–Century Studies at McMaster University.
