Bio: Captain Russell McLachlan is the chair of the strategy department at the Air War College, Air University at Maxwell AFB, Alabama. He grew up in Milton, Florida and was commissioned an Ensign in 1987 through the ROTC program at Auburn University with a Bachelors of Science degree in Business. He also attended the Air Command and Staff College and obtained a Masters in International Relations from Auburn University at Montgomery in 1999. After completing flight training at Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 110 (VAW 110) in San Diego, he was designated a naval flight officer (NFO) in 1989, flying the Navy’s premier command and control platform, the E-2C Hawkeye, amassing more than 2,300 flight hours. Captain McLachlan completed his first squadron tour in VAW 117 from 1990 until 1993, deploying onboard USS ENTERPRISE and USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN. He returned to sea duty as the assistant navigator onboard USS GEORGE WASHINGTON from 1996 until 1998. He continued to serve operationally and assumed command of VAW 121 in July 2005. Ashore, Captain McLachlan served as an NFO instructor in VAW 110 and VAW 120 from 1993 until 1996, and served as the placement officer (human resources and distribution) for the VAW and VRC communities at the Navy Personnel Command in Millington, Tennessee from November 2000 until June 2003. While there, he also deployed to Central Command’s 5th Fleet staff for Operations IRAQI and ENDURING FREEDOM. After numerous squadron tours, deployments and squadron command, he left the carrier community in 2006 and served within Joint Forces Command as the Emergent Requirements Lead in the Global Force Management community. He was then selected for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff AfPak Hands Program in 2009; he deployed in 2010 as the in-theater Afghan Hands Management Element Director in Kabul, Afghanistan. Upon transfer from the AfPak Hands program in 2011, Captain McLachlan served as the lead for Strategy and Plans within the Future Joint Force Development Directorate, Joint Staff J-7 in Suffolk, Virginia where he focused on solution development and implementation of joint concepts. He is married to the former Kay Whitaker of Milton, Florida. They reside in Auburn, Alabama with their three sons, Noah, Caleb and Jacob. |
