Neil Harvey Department of Government, New Mexico State University The Department of Government at New Mexico State University has the mission to produce and impart knowledge and skills necessary for understanding political issues and participating in public affairs. The Department offers two undergraduate programs: the BA in Government and an inter-disciplinary supplementary major in Law and Society. The BA program provides students with a broad knowledge of government and politics, while allowing students to focus on particular areas of interest, such as American politics, International Relations, or Public Law. Many students go on to study for post-graduate degrees or find employment in public service, government agencies, business, or non-profit organizations. Given the location of NMSU in the US Southwest, the Department provides unique opportunities for students interested in border issues, US-Mexican relations and Native American politics. The Supplementary Major in Law and Society is designed to promote inter-disciplinary understanding of the legal and ethical issues that face the nation and the State of New Mexico. Many graduates continue on to the study and practice of law, while others seek careers that require a strong appreciation for legal and institutional context for conducting business and social development. At the graduate level, the Department offers two programs: the MA in Government and the Master’s in Public Administration (MPA). The MA program trains students in research methods and skills needed for independent research projects on domestic and international affairs. Recent graduates have been placed in prestigious Ph.D. programs at Tulane University, the University of Denver’s Josef Korbel School of International Studies and the University of Massachusetts, among others. The MA program also offers a minor in security studies for students seeking careers in this important area. The MPA program has national accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA). It is therefore an attractive program for top students seeking to advance their careers in public service. Coursework prepares students in areas that are in high demand, such as public budgeting, program evaluation, policy analysis, and non-profit management. |
