Joanne Bernardi University of Rochester Associate Professor of Japanese in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures, a faculty member of the Film and Media Studies Program and the Selznick Graduate Program in Film and Media Preservation, and Affiliate Faculty in the Graduate Program in Visual and Cultural Studies at University of Rochester. B.F.A. in Photography, Film and Video from Kansas City Art Institute, an M.A. and Ph.D. in East Asian Studies from Columbia University, and an honorary certificate from the L. Jeffrey Selznick Program in Film Preservation. First book, Writing in Light (Wayne State, 2001), was on Japanese cinema of the 1910s, focusing on its intersection with changing international attitudes toward screenwriting, film production and consumption. Published on such topics as Japanese cinema, genre, and screenwriting during the silent era; Godzilla and nuclear culture in Japan and the United States; the writer Jun’ichiro Tanizaki; and the films of Kenji Mizoguchi and Yoshikata Yoda. Current project, Japan as Destination in 20th Century Visual and Material Culture, is an open-access, multimedia critical archive (a DIgital Humanities project) focusing on representations of Japan in the visual and material culture of travel and education. |
