Bio: Urs Matthias Zachmann is Professor of Modern Japanese History and Culture at Freie Universitaet Berlin. Prior to that, he was the Handa Professor of Japanese-Chinese Relations at the University of Edinburgh. Holding a PhD (Heidelberg 2006) and a Habilitation (LMU Munich 2010) in Japanese Studies, he is also qualified as a judge and advocate in the German legal system since 2002. He is author of China and Japan in the Late Meiji Period: China Policy and the Japanese Discourse on National Identity (2009) and Völkerrechtsdenken und Außenpolitik in Japan, 1919-1960 (The Japanese discourse on international law and foreign policy, 1919-1960, Nomos 2013), of which an English-language version is soon to be published by Cambridge University Press. He is Principal Investigator for an ERC-funded project on Japanese military justice in East and Southeast Asia during the Asia-Pacific War. |
