Frank Gerits European University Institute My phd. project analyzes American, Ghanaian, British and French public diplomacy towards the rising nations of Africa in the 1950s and 1960s. The focus is on how transnational competition and the mutual adoption of different propaganda strategies gave rise to a cultural Cold War that was global and intercultural. |

Bio: Frank Gerits studied history at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium) and the University of Illinois (U.S.A.) (Summa cum laude 2005-2009) [M.A. Thesis: Molding The Belgian Soul: American Public diplomacy in Cold War Belgium 1950-1958]. He furthermore did a M.A. in Management (2009-2010) [M.A. Thesis: International Trade and Methodology: World Trade Organization, Political Economy and Economic Theory]. He also received an M.A. of Transnational Research at the EUI as part of his doctoral training. He is a phd. Candidate at the European University Institute in Florence since September 2010. His project is called: “The Psychological Scramble for Africa: American, French and British Public Diplomacy (1945-1960s)”. It is a study of how transnational contacts shaped the public diplomacy strategy towards Africa and how the issue of colonialism strained the Trans-Atlantic Alliance. The project wants to understand public diplomacy as a transnational tool, used on a global scale. His main interests are The Cold War, American politics, public diplomacy in Africa, American foreign policy and Belgian foreign policy. |
