Bio: I received my Ph.D. in Southern/Afrian-American History at U.Va. in 2000; Ed Ayers was my thesis advisor. My first book, The Rebellious Slave: Nat Turner in American Memory, was published by Houghton Mifflin in February 2004. I'm currently working on a second book about 18th, 19th, and 20th century Virginians and their peculiar ideologies of race, region, and nation. My academic appointments at U.Va. include Asst. Professor (2000), Assoc. Professor (2005), Asst./Assoc./Interim Director of the Carter G. Woodson Institute for African-American and African Studies (2000-2006), and Director of the Virginia Center for Digital History (2006 to present). I've taught the intro to African and African American Studies survey (AAS 101), both halves of the African American history survey (HIUS 365/366), and both halves of the Southern history survey (HIUS 323/324). More recently, I've been teaching digital history seminars that involve partnerships with museums (Monticello) and archives (Smithsonian American Art Museum). |
