Mark E. Kehren <Mark.Kehren@loras.edu> Loras College I am particularly interested in the comparative history of urban renewal and neighborhood planning from 1945 to present. My current research examines urban renewal campaigns in Rio de Janeiro from 1960 to 1975 – the period after the city ceased to be the political capital of Brazil and was converted into the city-state of Guanabara. Like many cities during this time period, the urban renewal campaigns in Rio de Janeiro heavily revolved around integrating the automobile into the urban landscape which was subsequently challenging due to Rio's daunting topography. I have also recently developed a newly conceptualized project on Portuguese immigration to Brazil (Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo) from Europe and the former Portuguese colonies in Africa (Angola and Mozambique) from 1945 to the 1980s. |
