Bio: BA in Asian Studies, Dartmouth College, 1991. MA in East Asian Languages and Cultures, Columbia University 1995. PhD in East Asian Languages and Cultures, Columbia University 2001. Dissertation topic: "A Night in Shanghai: Nightlife and Modernity in a Semi-Colonial Chinese City, 1919-1937". Currently completing a manuscript on the nightlife industry/culture of Shanghai c. 1928-1948, focusing on the Chinese adaptation of Euro-American Jazz Age nightlife. Courses taught include Chinese Civilization, Modern Chinese History, History of East Asia, Modern Japanese History, Global History of Nightlife. I have also produced several short films and film clips focusing on Chinese historical sites as well as contemporary urban culture in China and Japan, some are now available for public use on my website. I have given conference papers in Japan, Australia, China, and the United States on the subject of nightlife and modernity in Shanghai, also on a new research project "The Nakayama Affair" focusing on the controversy surrounding the murder of a Japanese naval officer in Shanghai in 1935, a case study that illuminates international relations in Shanghai leading to WWII in Asia. |
