Marcia J. Bates <mjbates@ucla.edu> Dept. of Information Studies, UCLA Currently thinking about a lot of fundamental questions in the field. I've published two papers on information: Information and knowledge: An evolutionary framework for information science; and Fundamental forms of information. (See my website for full texts.) I am Editor, with Mary N. Maack, of the Encyclopedia of Library and Information Sciences. We are theorizing about the nature of the information sciences, and encourage interest from readers of H-Info regarding what they see the information sciences encompassing, and what topics they think should be included in the encyclopedia. |

Bio: Marcia J. Bates has M.L.S. and Ph.D. degrees in library and information science from the University of California at Berkeley. She has taught at the Universities of Maryland, Washington, and, since 1981, UCLA. She has taught and done research in information seeking behavior, information searching techniques, and user-centered design of information systems. She has taught in these areas, as well as in subject access and reference services. Three of her papers have been cited over 100 times, and several others dozens of times. She has won the Award of Merit of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, the highest award offered by the assocation. Two of her papers have received "Best Paper of the year" designation by the association--most recently "The Invisible Substrate of Information Science" in 1999. Dr. Bates has also done extensive consulting--with government, foundation, business, and dot-com companies. She is now Professor Emerita, having retired as Professor VI, a special rank requiring review beyond that for professor. |
