Aaron K. Gillette <gillettea@uhd.edu> University of Houston-Downtown I have recently written two books awaiting publication. One book, The Strange Death of Sociobiology and Evolutionary Psychology, explains that these sciences were first developed in the early 20th century. However, the reaction against hereditarian explanations of human behavior which gained force in the 1920s and 1930s condemned this early work to extinction. The second book, The History of Latin Eugenics, examines the development of a "Latin" variety of eugenics in the early 20th century. Latin eugenics was ultimately used as a tool by Fascist Italy in an attempt to dominate the scientific life of Latin America and other Latin countries. Latin eugenicists also fought against the theories and practices of American and German eugenics with some success. My two current projects are: Aryan Beauty, a history of American beauty circa 1900 to 1970, and the influence of Aryan racism on that concept; and a history of the concept of the Latin race. |
