James L. Yarnall Salve Regina University Continuing over twenty-five years of scholarly work on John La Farge, I am presently at work on a book on his stained glass to be co-authored with Julie L. Sloan. I am also putting through press with the University Press of New England a book on the architectural history of Newport, Rhode Island, entitled "Newport Through Its Architecture: A History of Styles from Postmedieval to Postmodern". I am interested in communiques on both topics. |

Bio: I earned my MA (1976) and Ph.D. (1981) in Art History from the University of Chicago. My speciality since graduate school has been American 19th- and early 20th-century painting and decorative arts. My special focus for most of my career has been on John La Farge, exploring every aspect of his work. I have published on this topic extensively in journals, including The American Art Journal, Antiques Magazine, and Nineteenth Century. I have produced four monographic books in conjunction with exhibitions, one in 1989 on La Farge Water Color and Drawings, one in 1995 on La Farge's Newport paintings, one in 1995 on La Farge's Still Lifes, and one in 1998 on La Farge's travel pictures of Japan and the South Seas. In addition, I have published articles in the journal "Newport History" on various topics, including La Farge. I presently teach Art and Architectural History at Salve Regina University as a full-time faculty member in the Department of Art. My courses include surveys of the entire history of art, courses on Eastern Art, courses on American Architecture, course on American Decorative Arts, courses on Modern Design, courses on Newport architecture, and other courses related to the history of Modern Art and Architecture. In addition, I serve as Editor of Publications for the Newport Historical Society, including for its journal "Newport History." I deliver several conference papers a year. In early 2004, I spoke at the annual meetings of the Society of Architectural Historians and the Society of Photographic Educators. Recently, I spoke a the Eighth Annual conference on Cultural and Historic Preservation at Salve Regina University. I will be delivering a keynote address in conjunction with Julie L. Sloan at the annual meeting of the British Master Glass Painters in London in February 2005. One of my primary interests now is in digital imaging, and I am exploring high-tech digital photography, scanning, and applications for digital projection. |
