Bio: I hold a B.A. in History and Latin American Studies from Yale University(1989) and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Comparative African Diaspora History from the University of Pennsylvania (1991 and 1996). My research concerns the diverse ways in which Africans and their descendants made culture and community throughout the Americas, thinking comparatively but often with particular attention to the Caribbean basin. I have taught survey courses in Caribbean history, intermediate courses on African-derived religions in the New World, on Caribbean Cultural History, and also teach an advanced seminar on Caribbean historiography. At the moment I am at various stage of work on several research projects including: a book length work dealing with the cultural adaptations of Africans rescued from illegally operating slave ships and settled in the Caribbean; and another study of the voyage of a single slave ship originally bound for Puerto Rico, but after capture for illegal slave trading, ultimately taken to the Bahamas, via Havana. In thinking of the comparative nature of Caribbean history by definition, I have tried in my own interests and teaching to pay attention to Caribbean territories of different linguistic backgrounds, and have fair knowledge of both French and Spanish; and a small bit of familiarity with Haitian Kreyol. |
